Unit 7 Review: Shopping & Object Pronouns
Welcome to the Unit 7 review! In this lesson, we will tie together everything you've learned about shopping, fashion, consumer life, and the tricky world of direct object pronouns (lo, la, li, le) and partitive pronouns (ne).
Direct Object Pronouns (Lo, La, Li, Le)
Direct object pronouns replace nouns to avoid repetition. They must agree in gender and number with the noun they replace:
- Lo (masculine singular) – e.g., Comperi il cappotto? Sì, lo compri. (Are you buying the coat? Yes, you buy it.)
- La (feminine singular) – e.g., Prendi la borsa? Sì, la prendo. (Are you taking the bag? Yes, I'm taking it.)
- Li (masculine plural) – e.g., Compri i pantaloni? Sì, li compro. (Are you buying the pants? Yes, I'm buying them.)
- Le (feminine plural) – e.g., Cerchi le scarpe? Sì, le cerco. (Are you looking for the shoes? Yes, I'm looking for them.)
The Partitive Pronoun "Ne"
Use ne to mean "some of it/them" when referring to quantities or numbers:
Quante magliette compri? Ne compro due. (How many t-shirts are you buying? I'm buying two of them.)
Common Mistake
Don't forget that in the passato prossimo, direct object pronouns (lo, la, li, le) require the past participle to agree with the pronoun in gender and number: Hai comprato la gonna? Sì, l'ho comprata.
