Setting the Scene with Imperfetto

Setting the Scene with the Imperfetto

Welcome to B1 Italian! When talking about the past, choosing the right tense is crucial. While the passato prossimo handles single, completed events, the imperfetto (imperfect) is your go-to tense for background descriptions, habitual past actions, weather, age, feelings, and ongoing states.

How to Form Regular Imperfetto

Remove the -are, -ere, or -ire endings and add the standard imperfect endings:

  • -are verbs: -evo, -evi, -eva, -evamo, -evate, -evano (e.g., parlare -> parlavo)
  • -ere verbs: -evo, -evi, -eva, -evamo, -evate, -evano (e.g., vedere -> vedevo)
  • -ire verbs: -ivo, -ivi, -iva, -ivamo, -ivate, -ivano (e.g., dormire -> dormivo)

Common Irregular Verbs

Verb io (I) tu (you) lui/lei (he/she)
essere (to be) ero eri era
avere (to have) avevo avevi aveva
fare (to do/make) facevo facevi faceva

Examples in Action

Da bambino, giocavo sempre in giardino. (As a child, I always played in the garden.)
Faceva molto freddo ieri sera. (It was very cold last night.)

Common Mistakes

Don't use the imperfetto for a sudden interruption! Use the imperfetto for the background action and the passato prossimo for the interrupting event: Dormivo quando hai telefonato. (I was sleeping when you called.)
