Setting the Scene: Weather in the Past
When telling stories about your childhood in Italian, you often need to describe the weather in the background. To say what the weather was like over a period of time, we use the imperfect tense (imperfetto) of weather verbs.
Key Weather Phrases
- Faceva freddo. – It was cold.
- Faceva caldo. – It was hot.
- Pioveva. – It was raining.
- Nevicava. – It was snowing.
- C'era il sole. – It was sunny.
- C'erant le nuvole / C'erano le nuvole. – There were clouds.
Notice how we use faceva (it used to make/do) for temperature and general conditions, pioveva and nevicava for precipitation, and c'era (there was) or c'erano (there were) to describe elements like the sun or clouds.
Common Mistakes
Don't use the passato prossimo (like ha piovuto) when setting a continuous background scene. Use pioveva for ongoing weather in the past!
