Describing People in the Past
When we talk about childhood memories in Italian, we often need to describe people's physical appearance and ages. For this, we use the imperfect tense (l'imperfetto) of the verbs essere (to be) and avere (to have).
1. Age and Physical Traits with 'Essere'
Use ero (I was), eri (you were), or era (he/she/it was) to describe physical features or age:
- Ero alto. (I was tall.)
- Mia sorella era bionda. (My sister was blonde.)
2. Having Features with 'Avere'
Use avevo (I had), avevi (you had), or aveva (he/she/it had) for hair, eyes, and general features:
- Avevo i capelli corti. (I had short hair.)
- Tu avevi gli occhi azzurri. (You had blue eyes.)
Common Mistakes
Remember that adjectives must match gender and number! Say Ero alto (male) or Ero alta (female).
