Navigating Movement in Italian
When traveling, getting the right preposition is crucial. At a B1 level, you need to know how to express origin, destination, means of transport, and purpose.
The Core Prepositions
- da: Movement from a place, or coming from a person/city.
- a: Movement to cities, or used with certain verbs/means (a piedi - on foot).
- in: Movement to countries, regions, large islands, or transport types (in treno, in macchina).
- per: Movement through, or destination indicating purpose/direction (partire per Roma).
Examples
- Vado in treno a Milano. (I'm going to Milan by train.)
- Partiamo per la Spagna domani. (We are leaving for Spain tomorrow.)
- Vengo da Firenze. (I come from Florence.)
Common Mistakes
Don't confuse in and a with transport: we use in for vehicles (in aereo, in autobus), but a for 'on foot' (a piedi).
