Checking into an Italian Hotel
Welcome to Unit 3! When traveling in Italy, knowing how to handle hotel accommodations smoothly will make your trip stress-free. Today, we will cover checking in, asking for extra items, and reporting issues.
1. Checking In
To check in, you will usually present your passport and reservation. Use polite forms like Vorrei (I would like) or Ho una prenotazione (I have a reservation).
- Ho una prenotazione a nome di Rossi. — I have a reservation under the name Rossi.
- A che ora è la colazione? — What time is breakfast?
2. Requesting Amenities
If you need extra towels, a quieter room, or Wi-Fi access, use modal verbs like posso avere (can I have) or potrebbe (could you, formal).
- Potrebbe darmi un cuscino extra? — Could you give me an extra pillow?
- Qual è la password del Wi-Fi? — What is the Wi-Fi password?
3. Reporting Issues
Sometimes things go wrong. To report a problem, politely inform the receptionist using phrases like non funziona (it doesn't work).
- L'aria condizionata non funziona. — The air conditioning doesn't work.
- C'è un problema con la doccia. — There is a problem with the shower.
Common Mistake: Avoid translating "I need" too literally with "ho bisogno" every time; Italians often prefer "Vorrei..." (I would like...) or "Mi serve..." (I need...).
