Colors and Materials in Italian
When shopping for clothes in Italy, you often need to describe what you are looking for by its color and fabric. In Italian, descriptive adjectives (like colors) usually come after the noun.
Expressing Materials
To say what a piece of clothing is made of, use the preposition di followed by the material:
- di cotone (made of cotton)
- di lana (made of wool)
- di pelle (made of leather)
- di seta (made of silk)
Common Colors
- blu (blue)
- rosso (red)
- nero (black)
- bianco (white)
- verde (green)
- giallo (yellow)
Examples
Cerco una camicia bianca di cotone. (I am looking for a white cotton shirt.)
Questa sciarpa di lana è molto calda. (This wool scarf is very warm.)
Common Mistake
Remember that materials use di, not da or in. Say una borsa di pelle, not una borsa in pelle.
