Talking About the Past: -ERE and -IRE Verbs
In Unit 10, you are learning how to talk about your vacation memories! To say what you did, you need the past tense (Passato Prossimo). This lesson focuses on regular -ere and -ire verbs.
How to Form the Past Participle
Just like with -are verbs, you remove the ending of the infinitive and add a new past participle ending:
- -ere verbs change to -uto (e.g., credere -> creduto)
- -ire verbs change to -ito (e.g., finire -> finito)
Examples in Action
| Infinitive | Past Participle | English Example |
|---|---|---|
| vendere | venduto | Ho venduto la casa. (I sold the house.) |
| partire | partito | Siamo partiti ieri. (We left yesterday.) |
| capire | capito | Ho capito tutto. (I understood everything.) |
Common Mistakes
Remember to match your auxiliary verb (usually avere or essere) correctly! Verbs of movement like partire use essere, while verbs like credere use avere.
