Comparing Things in Italian
In this lesson, you will learn how to compare clothing items, prices, and styles using Italian comparative structures. Whether you are shopping for a new jacket or checking prices, these tools are essential for A2 speakers!
1. More than (Più... di)
To say something is more [adjective] than something else, use più + adjective + di.
- Questa giacca è più bella di quella. (This jacket is more beautiful than that one.)
2. Less than (Meno... di)
To say something is less [adjective] than, use meno + adjective + di.
- Questa gonna è meno cara dei pantaloni. (This skirt is less expensive than the trousers.) Note: di often combines with definite articles (di + i = dei).
3. As... as (Così... come)
To say two things are equal in quality, use così + adjective + come.
- Il cappotto è così elegante come l'abito. (The coat is as elegant as the suit.)
Common Mistakes
Remember that the adjective must agree in gender and number with the noun you are describing! Do not forget to contract the preposition di with masculine plural articles (di + i = dei, di + gli = degli).
