Mastering the Kitchen and Restaurant in Italian (B1)
Welcome to your Unit 4 review! In this lesson, we consolidate everything you've learned about cooking, food preparation, and dining out. By B1 level, you should be comfortable not only ordering food but also giving instructions using the imperative mood.
1. The Imperative Mood (Formale vs. Informale)
When cooking or giving advice, we use imperatives. For informal commands (tu), regular verbs use -a for -are verbs and -i for -ere/-ire verbs. For formal commands (Lei), the endings flip: -i for -are and -a for -ere/-ire.
- Taglia le cipolle! (Informal: Cut the onions!)
- Tagli le cipolle, per favore! (Formal: Cut the onions, please!)
2. Essential Restaurant Chunks
Knowing how to request items politely and describe dishes makes dining out seamless.
- Vorrei ordinare il dolce. (I would like to order dessert.)
- Mi porti il conto, per favore? (Bring me the bill, please?)
Common Mistakes
Don't confuse the formal and informal imperative! Saying taglia to a waiter is too informal. Always use the formal Lei form (tagli, prenda, porti) with service staff.
