Complaining and Paying in Italy
Dining out doesn't always go perfectly! At an intermediate B1 level, you need to know how to address issues politely and ask for the bill without awkwardness.
Addressing Problems with Food
If something is wrong with your dish, start politely. Use conditional verbs like vorrei (I would like) or phrases like c'è un problema (there is a problem).
- È freddo: It is cold.
- È troppo salato: It is too salty.
- Manca...: ...is missing.
Asking for the Bill
In Italy, the waiter usually won't bring the check until you ask. You can also ask to pay separately.
- Il conto, per favore: The bill, please.
- Possiamo pagare separatamente?: Can we pay separately?
Common Mistakes
Don't say "Voglio il conto" as it sounds too demanding. Always use Vorrei or Posso avere.
