Talking About Hobbies in Italian

At the B1 level, you can move beyond basic likes and dislikes to discuss how you spend your free time, your favorite crafts, and weekend pastimes with more detail and nuance.

Expressing Preferences

Use verbs like dedicarsi a (to devote oneself to), passare il tempo (to spend time), and appassionarsi a (to become passionate about) to describe your hobbies.

  • Mi dedico alla ceramica nel fine settimana. (I devote myself to ceramics on the weekend.)
  • Passo il tempo libero leggendo romanzi storici. (I spend my free time reading historical novels.)

Common Mistakes

Don't confuse the preposition needed after certain verbs. We say dedicarsi a qualcosa and essere appassionato di qualcosa.
