Human Rights

Human Rights in Italian

Welcome to Unit 8: Society, Law, and Ethics. In this lesson, we explore how to articulate complex thoughts regarding diritti umani (human rights), discriminazione (discrimination), and giustizia sociale (social justice) at a B2 level.

Key Concepts & Rules

  • Use the subjunctive after impersonal expressions of necessity or importance (è fondamentale che, è necessario che) and after verbs of emotion or doubt (e.g., È fondamentale che tutti abbiano accesso...).
  • Employ impersonal forms (si deve, si ritiene) to discuss legal and ethical norms formally.

Example: La legge vieta qualsiasi forma di discriminazione basata sul sesso o sulla razza. (The law prohibits any form of discrimination based on sex or race.)

Common Mistakes

Avoid using the present indicative after expressions of necessity or societal demands: say È fondamentale che tutti abbiano, not *che tutti hanno.
