Describing Your Hometown
Welcome to Unit 5! In this lesson, you will learn how to compare how your town used to be with how it is today. To talk about the past, we use the imperfect tense (imperfetto), and for today, we use the present tense (presente).
Key Rules
- Use the imperfect tense for ongoing or repeated actions and states in the past (e.g., c'era = there was, c'erano = there were).
- Use transition words like prima (before) and oggi (today) to structure your comparison.
Examples
Prima c'era un parco, ma oggi c'è un centro commerciale.
Before there was a park, but today there is a shopping mall.
La mia città era tranquilla, ma ora è molto rumorosa.
My city was quiet, but now it is very noisy.
Common Mistakes
Avoid using the passato prossimo for permanent past states or descriptions of a town; always use the imperfect tense (era instead of è stato when describing general past conditions).
