City vs. Countryside Life: Comparing Lifestyles
In this lesson, you will learn how to compare life in the city (la città) with life in the countryside (la campagna) using comparatives and superlatives in Italian.
1. Comparatives of Inequality
To compare two things, use più (more) or meno (less) followed by di (than).
- La città è più rumorosa di campagna. (The city is noisier than the countryside.)
- La vita in campagna è meno stressante. (Life in the countryside is less stressful.)
When comparing two qualities of the same noun, use più/meno ... che:
- La città è più grande che bella. (The city is bigger than it is beautiful.)
2. Superlatives
To say something is the "most" or "least", use the definite article (il, la, i, le) + più/meno + adjective.
- Roma è la città più popolata. (Rome is the most populated city.)
To say something is "extremely" or "very" (absolute superlative), add the suffix -issimo/a/i/e to the adjective.
- Il traffico è caoticissimo! (The traffic is extremely chaotic!)
Common Mistakes
Remember that di contracts with definite articles (di + il = del, di + la = della):
❌ più grande di la città ➔ ✔️ più grande della città
