Childhood Memories

Telling Childhood Stories: Passato Prossimo vs. Imperfetto

When you talk about the past in Italian, you often need to combine two past tenses: the imperfetto (for background descriptions, habits, and ongoing states) and the passato prossimo (for sudden actions that interrupted the background).

The Golden Rule

  • Imperfetto: Used for setting the scene, age, weather, emotions, and things you used to do repeatedly. (e.g., Quando ero piccolo... - When I was little...)
  • Passato Prossimo: Used for specific, completed events that happened once or interrupted the background. (e.g., ...ho rotto la finestra. - ...I broke the window.)

Common Mistakes

Don't use the passato prossimo just because it sounds like English simple past! If you are describing how you felt or what the weather was like, stick to the imperfetto.
