Parts of the Body

Parts of the Body in Italian

Welcome to the Health and Body unit! In this lesson, you will learn how to name basic body parts in Italian, talk about pain, and describe physical actions. Knowing these words is essential for visiting the doctor or talking about how you feel.

Definite Articles with Body Parts

In Italian, we usually use the definite article (il, la, i, le) instead of possessive pronouns (my, your) when talking about body parts, as long as the context is clear.

  • Ho mal alla testa. – I have a headache (literally: pain at the head).
  • Mi fa male il braccio. – My arm hurts.

Common Vocabulary Rules

  • Feminine singular: la testa (the head), la mano (the hand).
  • Masculine singular: il braccio (the arm), il naso (the nose).
  • Plural forms: le gambe (the legs), i piedi (the feet). Note that il braccio becomes le braccia in the plural!

Common Mistakes

Mistake: Saying "Ho il mio mal di testa".
Correction: Just say "Ho mal di testa". Leave out the possessive pronoun!
