Fairy Tales and Legends in Italian
Welcome to Unit: Childhood and Memories! In this lesson, we will learn how to talk about classic fairy tales and legends. Storytelling in Italian always starts with a magical opening formula.
The Magic Opening: C'era una volta
Just like 'Once upon a time' in English, Italian uses C'era una volta to start a fairy tale. Literally, it means 'There was once'.
- C'era una volta una principessa. (Once upon a time, there was a princess.)
- C'era una volta un bosco incantato. (Once upon a time, there was an enchanted forest.)
Describing Characters and Places
To describe elements in stories, we use adjectives that agree in gender and number with the noun:
- Un drago spaventoso (A scary dragon)
- Una fata buona (A good fairy)
- Un castello grande (A big castle)
Common Mistakes
Mistake: Saying "C'erano una volta un re."
Correction: Use C'era for singular subjects (un re) and C'erano for plural subjects (due re).
