Dream Vacations: Hypothetical Worlds
Welcome to Unit 11! In this lesson, we combine the imperfetto del congiuntivo (past subjunctive) and the condizionale presente (present conditional) to talk about dream vacations and unreal situations.
The Golden Rule
When you imagine an unreal situation in the present or future, use se + congiuntivo imperfetto for the condition, and condizionale presente for the result.
- Se avessi soldi, viaggerei. (If I had money, I would travel.)
- Se potessi, andrei in Giappone. (If I could, I would go to Japan.)
Common Mistakes
Avoid using the conditional after 'se'. Se avrei soldi is incorrect; always use the subjunctive: Se avessi soldi.
