Expressing Uncertainty with the Subjunctive
In B1 Italian, when we want to express doubt, uncertainty, or impersonal opinions about travel memories and hypothetical worlds, we often use impersonal phrases followed by che and the present subjunctive (congiuntivo presente).
Key Formulas
- È possibile che + subjunctive (It is possible that...)
- È probabile che + subjunctive (It is likely that...)
- Non è sicuro che + subjunctive (It is not certain that...)
- Sembra che + subjunctive (It seems that...)
Examples
- È possibile che piova domani durante la gita. (It is possible that it rains tomorrow during the trip.)
- Non è sicuro che partiamo stasera. (It is not certain that we leave tonight.)
Common Mistakes
Avoid using the indicative mood after these expressions when expressing uncertainty. Always use the subjunctive! For example, do not say 'È possibile che partiamo' if you are expressing doubt; use 'È possibile che partiamo' (or rather, the correct subjunctive form like partiamo for 'noi' or partano for 'loro').
