Future Career Plans in Italian
Welcome to Unit 6! In this lesson, you will learn how to express your professional goals using the futuro semplice (future simple tense). Whether you are talking about what job you will do, where you will work, or how you will grow, the future tense is essential!
How to Form the Future Simple
Regular verbs drop their ending and add future endings based on the conjugation group (-are verbs change their 'a' to 'e'):
- -are / -ere: -rò, -rai, -rà, -remo, -rete, -ranno (e.g., lavorerò - I will work)
- -ire: -rò, -rai, -rà, -remo, -rete, -ranno (e.g., finirò - I will finish)
Here are some examples of professional aspirations:
- Lavorerò in una grande azienda. - I will work in a large company.
- Guadagnerò uno stipendio alto. - I will earn a high salary.
Common Irregular Verbs
Many common verbs have irregular stems in the future, but they all use the same standard endings:
- essere (to be) $
ightarrow$ sar- (sarò - I will be) - avere (to have) $
ightarrow$ avr- (avrò - I will have) - fare (to do/make) $
ightarrow$ far- (farò - I will do) - potere (to be able to) $
ightarrow$ potr- (potrò - I will be able to)
Common Mistakes
Mistake: Using the present tense for future plans.
Correction: Always use the future tense when making definitive predictions or statements about your future career: "Domani lavoro" (I am working tomorrow - present for near future) vs. "L'anno prossimo lavorerò all'estero" (Next year I will work abroad - future tense for career plans).
