Environmental Sustainability at Home
Welcome to Unit 5! In this lesson, we will learn how to talk about green habits, recycling, and saving energy around the house in Italian. Being eco-friendly (ecologico) is increasingly important, and discussing it in Italian is great for your B1 fluency.
Key Vocabulary & Concepts
- La raccolta differenziata: Waste sorting/recycling.
- Risparmiare energia: To save energy.
- I rifiuti organici: Organic waste / compost.
Useful Sentence Patterns
To talk about what we must do or what is useful to do, we use impersonal structures like È importante (It is important) and modal verbs like dobbiamo (we must).
| Italian | English |
|---|---|
| È importante fare la raccolta differenziata. | It is important to sort the recycling. |
| Dobbiamo spegnere la luce. | We must turn off the light. |
Common Mistakes
Avoid translating 'to save energy' literally word-for-word with 'salvare'. In Italian, we use risparmiare for saving money, water, or energy, while salvare is used for rescuing people or animals.
