Unit 1 Review: Past Tenses in Action
Welcome to your first review lesson! At the B1 level, you can narrate past experiences, tell stories, and describe how things used to be. To do this fluently, you must combine two key past tenses: il passato prossimo and l'imperfetto.
When to use Passato Prossimo vs. Imperfetto
- Passato Prossimo: Used for completed actions, main events, and specific changes in a storyline. Example: Ieri ho comprato una macchina nuova. (Yesterday I bought a new car.)
- Imperfetto: Used for background descriptions, habits, ongoing past states, time, and weather. Example: Quando ero giovane, abitavo a Roma. (When I was young, I used to live in Rome.)
Combining Tenses in Narratives
Often, a story uses the imperfetto for the ongoing background scene and the passato prossimo for the sudden action that interrupts it.
Example: Mentre dormivo, qualcuno ha bussato alla porta. (While I was sleeping, someone knocked on the door.)
Common Mistakes
- Mistake: Using the passato prossimo for continuous background states (e.g., *Ho avuto* fame).
Correction: Use the imperfetto (*Avevo* fame - I was hungry). - Mistake: Forgetting auxiliary verbs (essere/avere) in the passato prossimo.
