Mastering the Passato Prossimo
In B1 Italian, talking about things you've done means using the passato prossimo. This is a compound tense made of two parts: an auxiliary verb (either avere or essere) plus a past participle.
Avere vs. Essere
Most verbs use avere. However, verbs of motion, state of being, and reflexive verbs use essere. When you use essere, the past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject!
- Ho mangiato una pizza. (I ate a pizza - using avere)
- Sono andato a Roma. (I went to Rome - using essere, masculine singular)
- Sono andata a Roma. (I went to Rome - using essere, feminine singular)
Regular Past Participles
| Ending | Participle |
|---|---|
| -are | -ato (parlato) |
| -ere | -uto (creduto) |
| -ire | -ito (partito) |
Common Mistakes
Don't forget that verbs like andare, venire, and arrivare take essere, not avere! Always check your auxiliary verb.
