Sports and Games in Italian
In English, we usually use the verb "to play" for both sports and board games. In Italian, however, you have to choose between two different verbs depending on what you are doing!
1. Giocare a (To play sports and games)
We use giocare a when talking about team sports, ball games, and board games. Note that the preposition a combines with definite articles:
- a + il = al (e.g., al calcio - football)
- a + la = alla (e.g., alla pallavolo - volleyball)
- a + i = ai (e.g., ai videogiochi - video games)
Example: Io gioco al calcio. (I play football.)
2. Fare (To do / To make)
We use fare (usually with the partitive article del, dello, della, etc., or just the definite article) when talking about individual sports, athletics, or general physical activities.
Example: Lei fa nuoto. (She does swimming / She swims.)
Common Mistakes
Wrong: *Io gioco il tennis.*
Correct: Io gioco al tennis. (Remember the preposition a after giocare!)
