Talking About Your Future Career
In this lesson, you will learn how to use the future tense (il futuro semplice) to talk about your job plans, career goals, and future dreams in Italian.
How to Form the Future Tense
For regular verbs ending in -are, -ere, and -ire, you change the ending and add future endings (-erò, -erai, -erà, -eremo, -erete, -eranno for -are/-ere; -irò, -irai, -irà, -iremo, -irete, -iranno for -ire).
Note that -are verbs change their 'a' to 'e' in the stem (e.g., lavorare becomes lavorer-).
Examples:
- Lavorerò in un grande ufficio. (I will work in a big office.)
- Un giorno guadagnerò molto denaro. (One day I will earn a lot of money.)
- Tu diventerai un bravo ingegnere. (You will become a good engineer.)
Common Irregular Verbs
Some important verbs have irregular stems in the future:
| Verb | Future Stem | Example |
|---|---|---|
| essere | sar- | Sarò felice (I will be happy) |
| avere | avr- | Avrò successo (I will have success) |
| fare | far- | Farò una carriera (I will make a career) |
| potere | potr- | Potrò viaggiare (I will be able to travel) |
Common Mistake
Don't confuse the present tense with the future! Lavoro means 'I work', but lavorerò means 'I will work'.
