Making Phone Calls in Italian
When you make or receive phone calls in Italian, polite phrases and clear communication are key. This lesson covers how to start a conversation, ask for someone, and leave a message.
Answering the Phone
- Pronto? - Hello? (used when answering the phone)
- Chi parla? - Who is speaking?
Asking for Someone
- Posso parlare con...? - Can I speak with...?
- È occupato/a. - The line is busy.
- C'è un messaggio? - Is there a message?
Leaving a Message
If the person you want is not there, you can ask to leave a message:
- Vorrei lasciare un messaggio. - I would like to leave a message.
- Può richiamare più tardi? - Can you call back later?
Common Mistake: Do not say 'Ciao' when answering a formal business call; stick to Pronto? or state your name and company.
