Expressing Obligations in Italian
In A2 Italian, talking about rules, duties, and necessities is essential for navigating society. We use the modal verb dovere (to have to / must) and impersonal expressions like bisogna and si deve.
1. The Verb 'Dovere'
Use dovere when a specific person has an obligation. Conjugation in the present tense:
- io devo (I must)
- tu devi (You must)
- lui/lei deve (He/She must)
- noi dobbiamo (We must)
- voi dovete (You all must)
- loro devono (They must)
Example: Devo studiare per l'esame. (I have to study for the exam.)
2. Impersonal Expressions
When stating a general rule that applies to everyone, use impersonal structures which take the third-person singular:
- Bisogna + infinitive: It is necessary to... (Very common for general rules)
- Si deve + infinitive: One must / You should...
Example: Bisogna pagare il biglietto. (It is necessary to buy a ticket.)
Common Mistakes
Don't confuse personal and impersonal! Don't say *'bisogni'*. 'Bisogna' never changes its ending when followed by a verb.
