Mastering Hypotheticals and Wishes
Welcome to Unit 11 Review! In this lesson, we consolidate how to talk about hypothetical situations and our past travel memories using the conditional and the subjunctive moods.
1. The Present Conditional (Il Condizionale Presente)
Used to express what you would do or what would happen under certain conditions. Formed by dropping the final -e of the infinitive (or changing -are to -er-) and adding conditional endings: -ei, -esti, -ebbe, -emmo, -este, -ebbero.
- Vorrei visitare Roma. (I would like to visit Rome.)
- Andremmo in treno se potessimo. (We would go by train if we could.)
2. The Past Subjunctive (Il Congiuntivo Passato)
Used after expressions of doubt, emotion, or opinion when the main clause is in the present and the subordinate action happened in the past.
- Dubito che sia andato in Spagna. (I doubt that he went to Spain.)
Common Mistakes
Don't confuse the future tense (andrò - I will go) with the conditional (andrei - I would go). Also, remember that wishes about the present often require the imperfect subjunctive (e.g., se avessi - if I had).
