Mastering the Conditional Mood in Italian
Welcome to Unit 11! Today, we introduce the present conditional (il condizionale presente). We use this mood to express polite requests, personal desires, or actions that would happen under certain conditions—similar to saying "would" or "could" in English.
How to Form Regular Verbs
To form the conditional, take the future stem of the verb (dropping the final -e of the infinitive for -are verbs, changing it to -i-) and add the conditional endings: -ei, -esti, -ebbe, -emmo, -este, -ebbero.
- Parlare (to speak) → parleresti (you would speak)
- Prendere (to take) → prenderebbe (he/she would take)
- Dormire (to sleep) → dormiremmo (we would sleep)
Polite Requests and Desires
Modal verbs like volere (to want), potere (can), and dovere (must) are extremely common in the conditional to soften requests.
| Italian Example | English Translation |
|---|---|
| Vorrei un caffè, per favore. | I would like a coffee, please. |
| Potresti aiutarmi? | Could you help me? |
| Mi piacerebbe viaggiare in Italia. | I would like to travel to Italy. |
Common Mistakes
Don't confuse the conditional with the future tense! Remember: parlerò means "I will speak," but parlerei means "I would speak."
