Expressing Unrealized Plans in Italian (B1)
Sometimes things don't go according to plan! In B1 Italian, we use specific structures to talk about what was supposed to happen, what we intended to do, or what we were supposed to do, but ultimately didn't.
1. Using Modal Verbs in the Imperfect (Imperfetto)
To express an unfulfilled obligation or a plan in the past, we use modal verbs like dovere (to have to), volere (to want), and potere (to be able to) in the imperfect tense, often followed by a present infinitive.
- Dovevo partire ieri. → I was supposed to leave yesterday. (Implicitly, I didn't).
- Volevo visitare il museo, ma era chiuso. → I wanted to visit the museum, but it was closed.
2. Common Mistakes
Don't confuse simple past actions with unrealized plans. Using the passato prossimo (e.g., ho dovuto partire) usually implies you actually completed the obligation, whereas the imperfetto (dovevo partire) implies the plan remained unrealized.
