Choosing Auxiliary Verbs in the Past (Passato Prossimo)
In Italian, compound past tenses require either essere (to be) or avere (to have) as an auxiliary verb before the past participle. Getting this right is crucial for B1 fluency!
When to use ESSERE:
- Verbs of movement or location (e.g., andare, venire, partire, arrivare).
- Verbs of state of being or change (e.g., nascere, morire, diventare, rimanere).
- All reflexive verbs (e.g., svegliarsi, lavarsi).
- Crucial rule: When using essere, the past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject (e.g., lei è andata vs. lui è andato).
When to use AVERE:
- Most transitive verbs that take a direct object (answering 'what?' or 'whom?'), like mangiare, vedere, comperare.
- Verbs expressing emotion or mental action without movement.
- Crucial rule: The past participle generally does not change its ending when using avere.
Common Mistake: Saying Ho andato instead of Sono andato. Remember: movement verbs always use essere!
