Imperfetto vs Passato Prossimo

Imperfetto vs. Passato Prossimo

When telling stories in the past, Italian uses two main tenses. Choosing the right one changes the feeling of your story!

1. L'Imperfetto (The Imperfect)

Use the imperfetto for background information, habits, age, weather, emotions, and actions that were ongoing without a specific endpoint.

  • Esempio: Quando ero piccolo, giocavo sempre in giardino. (When I was little, I always played in the garden.)

2. Il Passato Prossimo

Use the passato prossimo for completed actions, specific main events that moved the story forward, or actions that happened a specific number of times.

  • Esempio: Ieri ho comprato un nuovo giocattolo. (Yesterday I bought a new toy.)

3. Combining Both in Stories

Often, the imperfetto sets the scene while the passato prossimo interrupts it with a sudden event!

  • Esempio: Pioveva quando sono uscito. (It was raining when I went out.)

Common Mistake: Don't use the passato prossimo just because something happened in the past if it was an ongoing habit or description!
