Talking About Last Weekend in Italian
Welcome to your A2 lesson on the passato prossimo! When you want to tell someone what you did last weekend, you need the past tense. In Italian, this is formed by combining an auxiliary verb (either avere or essere) with a past participle.
How to Form the Past Participle
- Verbs ending in -are change to -ato (e.g., parlare -> parlato).
- Verbs ending in -ere change to -uto (e.g., credere -> creduto).
- Verbs ending in -ire change to -ito (e.g., dormire -> dormito).
Avere vs. Essere
Most verbs use avere. However, verbs of movement, staying in one place, and reflexive verbs use essere, and the past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject!

Common Mistakes
