Talking About the Weather in Italian
In Italian, we usually use two main verbs to talk about the weather: fa (it makes / it does) and c'è (there is).
1. Using 'Fa' (Temperature & General Feel)
We use fa with nouns or adjectives to describe how it feels outside.
- Fa caldo. (It is hot.)
- Fa freddo. (It is cold.)
- Fa bel tempo. (The weather is nice.)
- Fa brutto tempo. (The weather is bad.)
2. Using 'C'è' (There is)
We use c'è when talking about specific weather conditions like sun, wind, or clouds.
- C'è il sole. (It is sunny / There is sun.)
- C'è vento. (It is windy.)
- C'è la nebbia. (It is foggy.)
3. Weather Verbs
Some weather conditions are verbs on their own!
- Piove. (It rains.)
- Nevica. (It snows.)
Common Mistake: Do not say 'è caldo' for 'it is hot' when talking about the weather. In Italian, weather uses fare: always use fa caldo!
