Welcome to Unit 12! At the B2 level, moving beyond literal translation is crucial for expressive fluency. Today we explore iperbole (hyperbole), litote (understatement), and ironia (irony).
1. Iperbole (Hyperbole)
Exaggeration for emphasis. Use it to stress strong emotions or extreme situations.
Te l'ho detto un milione di volte! (I've told you a million times!)
2. Litote (Understatement)
Affirming something by negating its opposite. Great for polite disagreement or subtle wit.
Non è proprio un genio. (He's not exactly a genius / He's a bit dim.)
3. Ironia (Irony)
Saying one thing while meaning the opposite, often delivered with a specific tone.
Che tempismo perfetto! said when it starts pouring rain.
Common Mistake: Confusing literal negatives with litotes. Remember, litotes relies on double negatives or polite negation to soften a harsh reality, not just simple denial.
