Literary Genres and Styles

Welcome to Literary Genres and Styles!

At the B2 level, discussing literature requires moving beyond basic plot summaries to analyze stylistic choices, narrative structures, and thematic resonance. In this lesson, we will explore advanced vocabulary related to prose, poetry, plot development, and critical themes.

1. Prose and Narrative Structure

When discussing novels or short stories, you need terms for how the story is built. A trama (plot) often features a surprising colpo di scena (plot twist) and reaches a dramatic climax.

  • La narrazione in prima persona: First-person narration.
  • Il punto di vista: The point of view.
  • Il colpo di scena: The plot twist.

Example: Il romanzo si apre con un avvincente colpo di scena. (The novel opens with a gripping plot twist.)

2. Poetry and Verse

Poetry relies on rhythm, imagery, and meter. A poem is a poesia composed of multiple strofe (stanzas) and versi (lines of verse), often employing metafore (metaphors).

  • La rima baciata: Rhymed couplet.
  • Il verso libero: Free verse.
  • La metrica: Meter (metrics).

Example: Il poeta usa una complessa metafora per descrivere il tempo. (The poet uses a complex metaphor to describe time.)

3. Themes and Common Mistakes

Be careful not to confuse tema (theme) with soggetto (subject matter or screenplay subject). Also, remember that romanzo means novel, not romance (which is storia d'amore).
