Unit 2 Review: People and Places
Welcome to your Unit 2 review! In this lesson, we will consolidate everything you have learned about talking about your family, identifying people, and using the correct articles in Italian.
1. Family and Nouns
In Italian, nouns have a gender (masculine or feminine) and a number (singular or plural). Family members usually follow these endings:
- il padre (the father) / la madre (the mother)
- il fratello (the brother) / la sorella (the sister)
- Plurals change endings: il fratello becomes i fratelli (the brothers), and la sorella becomes le sorelle (the sisters).
2. Definite Articles
Choosing the right article depends on the gender and starting letter of the noun:
- Il (masculine singular, before consonants)
- Lo (masculine singular, before s + consonant, z, etc., like lo zio)
- La (feminine singular, before consonants)
- L' (before vowels, e.g., l'amico)
Common Mistake: Do not mix up masculine and feminine articles. Remember: la padre is incorrect; it must be il padre!
