Regular -ARE Verbs

Mastering Regular -ARE Verbs in Italian

In Italian, most verbs end in -are, -ere, or -ire. The largest group is verbs ending in -ARE, such as parlare (to speak), lavorare (to work), and abitare (to live). To use these verbs, you remove the -are ending and add specific endings for each subject pronoun!

Conjugation Rule for -ARE Verbs:

  • io (I) ➔ add -o (parlo - I speak)
  • tu (you singular) ➔ add -i (parli - you speak)
  • lui / lei (he / she) ➔ add -a (parla - he/she speaks)
  • noi (we) ➔ add -iamo (parliamo - we speak)
  • voi (you plural) ➔ add -ate (parlate - you all speak)
  • loro (they) ➔ add -ano (parlano - they speak)

Examples:

Italian English
Io lavoro a Roma. I work in Rome.
Tu abiti qui. You live here.
Noi parliamo italiano. We speak Italian.

Common Mistakes:

Don't forget to change the ending! Saying io parlare instead of io parlo sounds like saying "I to speak" in English. Also, remember that subject pronouns like io or tu are often dropped because the verb ending already tells you who is doing the action.
