Describing Personalities in Italian
In this lesson, you will learn how to describe what people are like. In Italian, adjectives must match the gender and number of the person they describe.
Basic Adjective Endings
- Adjectives ending in -o usually change to -a for feminine singular (e.g., simpatico becomes simpatica).
- Adjectives ending in -e (like intelligente) stay the same for both masculine and feminine singular!
Examples
- Marco è simpatico. (Marco is nice.)
- Anna è simpatica. (Anna is nice.)
- Maria è intelligente. (Maria is intelligent.)
Common Mistakes
Remember that Italian adjectives usually come after the noun or verb, unlike English where they come before the noun in a phrase.
