Introducing Yourself

Introducing Yourself in Italian

Welcome to your first steps in Italian! When you meet someone new, you will want to tell them your name. In Italian, there are two very common ways to say who you are:

1. Io sono (I am)

The pronoun io means "I" and sono means "am". You can use this to say your name directly.

  • Io sono Marco. – I am Marco.
  • Io sono Anna. – I am Anna.

2. Mi chiamo (My name is)

Literally meaning "I call myself", mi chiamo is a very natural way to introduce yourself in everyday conversation.

  • Mi chiamo Luca. – My name is Luca.
  • Mi chiamo Sofia. – My name is Sofia.

Common Mistakes

Don't confuse the two! Remember that io sono translates directly to "I am", while mi chiamo translates to "I call myself". Both are correct for introductions.
