GENDER: Masculine and Feminine

Gender in Italian Nouns: -o and -a

In Italian, every noun has a grammatical gender: it is either masculine or feminine. Unlike English, even everyday objects like tables and books have a gender!

The Golden Rule

  • Nouns ending in -o are usually masculine (e.g., il ragazzo - the boy).
  • Nouns ending in -a are usually feminine (e.g., la ragazza - the girl).

Examples

Masculine (-o) Feminine (-a)
il ragazzo (the boy) la ragazza (the girl)
l'amico (the male friend) l'amica (the female friend)
il libro (the book) la penna (the pen)

Common Mistakes

Don't assume words are masculine just because they refer to people! Always check the ending. A female student is la studentessa, but for basic words, stick to the clear -o and -a patterns.
