Frequency Adverbs in Italian
When talking about your hobbies and free time, it is very useful to say how often you do things. In Italian, frequency adverbs usually go right after the verb.
The Frequency Scale
- Sempre = always
- Spesso = often
- Qualche volta = sometimes
- Mai = never
Here are some examples in action:
| Italian | English |
|---|---|
| Io gioco sempre. | I always play. |
| Lui legge spesso. | He reads often. |
| Noi qualche volta usciamo. | We sometimes go out. |
| Tu non mangi mai. | You never eat. |
Common Mistakes
Remember that with mai (never), you usually need the negative word non before the verb: Io non nuoto mai (I never swim). Do not put frequency adverbs at the very end of the sentence!
