Agreement of Adjectives

Italian Adjective Agreement

In Italian, adjectives must agree in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural) with the noun they describe.

The Four Forms

Standard adjectives usually end in -o (masculine singular), -a (feminine singular), -i (masculine plural), and -e (feminine plural).

  • Grande (big): la casa grande (the big house), le case grandi (the big houses).
  • Nuovo (new): il letto nuovo (the new bed), i letti nuovi (the new beds), la cucina nuova (the new kitchen), le cucine nuove (the new kitchens).

Common Mistakes

Avoid mixing genders! Do not say il letto nuova because 'letto' is masculine and requires the masculine singular ending -o.
