Giving Advice in Italian
When you want to give advice or make recommendations in Italian, you can use modal verbs or helpful conditional phrases. This lesson covers how to tell someone what they should or could do!
1. Using Modal Verbs
To say you should, use the verb dovere (to have to/must) in the present tense, or the conditional form of dovere (dovresti) for a softer 'you should'. Use potere (potresti) to say 'you could'.
- Dovresti studiare di più. (You should study more.)
- Potresti parlare con lui. (You could speak with him.)
2. Giving Friendly Suggestions
Another great way to give advice is by saying 'If I were you...' (Al posto mio... / Al tuo posto...).
- Al tuo posto, farei una pausa. (In your place, I would take a break.)
Common Mistake: Remember that modal verbs like dovresti are followed by an infinitive verb without any preposition (e.g., dovresti dormire, not dovresti a dormire).
