Talking About Past Travel in Italian
When you talk about movement, travel, or changes in state in Italian, you must use the auxiliary verb essere (to be) in the past tense (Passato Prossimo), instead of avere.
The Golden Rule
Verbs of motion like andare (to go), venire (to come), and partire (to leave) use essere. Remember that the past participle must match the gender and number of the person doing the action!
- -o for masculine singular (e.g., sono andato)
- -a for feminine singular (e.g., sono andata)
- -i for masculine plural (e.g., siamo andati)
- -e for feminine plural (e.g., siamo andate)
Examples
- Sono andato a Roma. (I went to Rome - male speaker)
- Maria è partita ieri. (Maria left yesterday)
- Siamo venuti in treno. (We came by train)
Common Mistakes
Don't say ho andato! Always use sono andato for verbs of movement.
