At the B2 level, discussing past events often involves reflecting on what could, should, or would have happened differently. In Italian, this is achieved using the past conditional (condizionale passato).
The Golden Rule
To express missed opportunities, you combine the auxiliary verb avere or essere in the conditional present with the past participle of the main verb.
Avrei dovuto + infinitive = I should have...
Avrei potuto + infinitive = I could have...
Avrei voluto + infinitive = I would have liked to...
Examples
Avrei dovuto studiare di più per l'esame. (I should have studied more for the exam.)
Se fossi partito prima, avrei evitato il traffico. (If I had left earlier, I would have avoided the traffic.)
Sarei dovuto andare alla festa. (I should have gone to the party.)
Common Mistakes
Don't use the present conditional when you mean a past missed opportunity. Saying 'Dovrei studiare' means 'I should study (now/in the future)', whereas 'Avrei dovuto studiare' means 'I should have studied (in the past, but I didn't).' Also, remember that with modal verbs (dovere, potere, volere) followed by a verb that takes essere (like andare), traditional grammar prefers the auxiliary essere: Sarei dovuto andare. However, avrei dovuto andare is also correct and very common in everyday Italian.
