Talking About the Future in Italian
When you want to talk about what you will do in your career, you use the simple future tense (il futuro semplice). In this lesson, we will focus on regular verbs!
How to Form the Future Tense
To form the future tense for regular verbs, you take the infinitive, drop the final -e, and add the future endings:
- -are verbs change to -er- before adding endings (e.g., lavorare becomes lavorer-).
- -ere and -ire verbs keep their vowel (e.g., prendere becomes prender-, finire becomes finir-).
Future Endings
- io: -ò
- tu: -ai
- lui/lei: -à
- noi: -emo
- voi: -ete
- loro: -anno
Examples
- Lavorerò a Milano. - I will work in Milan.
- Domani firmeremo il contratto. - Tomorrow we will sign the contract.
Common Mistake
Don't forget the accent on the final vowel for io and lui/lei! Writing lavorero instead of lavorerò changes the meaning or is grammatically incorrect.
