Talking About Past Trips
In this lesson, you will learn how to share your travel stories in Italian! When we talk about things we did in the past, we usually use the passato prossimo (compound past tense).
Forming the Passato Prossimo
Most travel verbs (like viaggiare - to travel, or visitare - to visit) use the auxiliary verb avere plus the past participle ending in -ato.
- Ho visitato Roma. (I visited Rome.)
- Abbiamo prenotato un albergo. (We booked a hotel.)
However, verbs of movement (like andare - to go, or arrivare - to arrive) use essere and must agree in gender and number with the subject!
- Sono andato in Spagna. (I went to Spain - male)
- Siamo partiti ieri. (We left yesterday - plural)
Common Mistakes
Don't say: Ho andato in treno.
Say instead: Sono andato in treno. (Verbs of movement use essere, not avere!)
