Where Are You From?
In this lesson, you will learn how to introduce yourself and state your nationality in Italian. To do this, we use the verb essere (to be) and nationality adjectives.
The Verb Essere (To Be)
- io sono (I am)
- tu sei (you are)
- lui/lei è (he/she is)
Nationalities in Italian
Nationality words change depending on whether you are talking about a male or female. Usually, masculine forms end in -o and feminine forms end in -a.
- americano / americana (American)
- italiano / italiana (Italian)
- inglese (English - does not change for gender)
Common Mistakes
Remember that in Italian, nationality adjectives start with a lowercase letter, unlike in English! Say sono americano, not sono Americano.
